Scripture
20You sit and speak against your brother; You slander your own mother’s son. 21These things you have done, and I kept silent; You thought that I was altogether like you; But I will rebuke you,
And set them in order before your eyes. Psalm 50:20-21
Observation
Psalm 50 paints a powerful picture of the end of days when all people are brought before God and He separates the faithful from the fools, the saints from the sinners, the sheep from the goats. "4He shall call to the heavens from above, And to the earth, that He may judge His people: 5“Gather My saints together to Me, Those who have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice.” 6Let the heavens declare His righteousness, For God Himself is Judge. Selah". Yes, I've been taking a Selah moment this morning to soak in the Return of The King, the rapture of God's people, and the final judgement. That's a lot before my first cup of coffee is even finished. What really woke me up this moring was the description of those who came under God's judgement on the last day. They were making deals with evil behind closed doors, taking advantage of those in need, tearing down their own family to get ahead and they were successful. They judged God's slowness and silence as agreement with their sinful scheming. They made God in their own image and thought God was just like them! God is no fool! The bill will come due! God is nothing like us nor will He look the other way when we live in sin. Just because judgement hasn't come yet, it doens't mean it's not coming. Justice demands it.
Application
It's April Fools Day and I'm feeling pretty foolish. Often, I look around me and see a lot of fools who are very successful in their lives of sin and wonder why God doesn't do something. In contrast, I look around and see a lot of saints suffering as they walk in obedience to God's commands. It often feels like God just doesn't notice or worse yet just doesn't care about the injustice all around us. Yet, I know God is no fool! The bill will come due! God isn't like me. Where I would bring justice swiftly He brings it slowly to give a chance for all to repent. The danger comes when we "get away with sin" and think this means God is good with it. This is foolish thinking and will wind us up on the wrong side of the judgement seat. Paul puts it this way in Romans 2: "4Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: 7eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, 9tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil..."
Prayer
Jesus, I thought You were like me, but Your ways are above my ways and Your thoughts above mine. When I see injustice around me You want me pray for the salvation of the sinner in the same way people prayed for me. You want me to be a part of the solution rather than just grumbling about the problem and how unfair it all is. Let me live my life in the context of Your immanent return. Forgive me judging Your slowness of response to the injustice of this world as foolish indifference. You see everything. Nothing gets by Your attention. One day You will set things in right order. Thank You for Your immense patience with me. Jesus, thank You that when the bill comes due mine has been paid in full through Your sacrifice on The Cross!
